How can I send a secure fax for free?

Most truly free secure fax services are limited. Comfax, Dropbox Fax, and Fax.Plus offer free tiers with encryption but limited page allowances (5–10 pages). For ongoing free secure faxing, consider trial periods from eFax (7 days) or Fax.Plus (30 days). After the trial, paid plans start at $6.99–$9.99/month for low-volume users.

What is the most secure fax?

The most secure fax services combine AES-256 encryption, HIPAA/SOC 2 certification, and audit trails. Comfax, eFax, and SRFax lead in enterprise security. Choose based on your industry: healthcare teams benefit from SRFax's medical focus; general businesses prefer Comfax or Fax.Plus. All three meet modern encryption and compliance standards.

What is considered a secure fax?

A secure fax uses encryption (AES-256 or TLS 1.2+), requires authenticated secure fax login, maintains audit logs, and stores data in encrypted cloud storage. The platform should carry third-party certifications (HIPAA, SOC 2, ISO 27001) proving security controls. Documents are never printed or exposed to unsecured networks. Email-to-fax and web portal access must use HTTPS/TLS.

What is the most secure way to send a fax?

The most secure method combines: (1) cloud-based platform with AES-256 encryption (not old fax machines), (2) email-to-fax or web portal upload over HTTPS, (3) recipient verification to confirm the correct fax number, (4) delivery confirmation via receipt report, (5) secure fax login with MFA if possible. Platforms like Comfax, eFax, and Fax.Plus automate these steps, eliminating paper and human error.

Can I fax online securely without a fax machine?

Yes, all platforms ranked here support online faxing without hardware. Upload documents or send via email to your fax number. Incoming faxes arrive as encrypted PDFs in your inbox or cloud storage. Modern secure fax services are 100% cloud-based, eliminating the need for physical fax machines, phone lines, or maintenance. You need only an internet connection and a supported device (computer, tablet, phone).

Are online fax services compliant with HIPAA for healthcare?

Some are, some aren't. HIPAA-compliant secure fax services include Comfax (Enterprise), eFax, SRFax, iFax, and Nextiva vFax. They require signed Business Associate Agreements (BAAs) and offer HIPAA-ready configurations. Dropbox Fax and Fax.Plus do not advertise standard HIPAA compliance. Healthcare teams must verify HIPAA certification before signing up; using a non-compliant service for patient data risks regulatory penalties.

Is secure faxing actually secure, or is it just marketing hype?

Legitimate secure fax services (Comfax, eFax, SRFax) use real AES-256 encryption and hold third-party certifications (SOC 2, HIPAA, ISO 27001) proving security claims. These are independently audited and not marketing hype. However, free or unvetted services may lack genuine encryption. Verify certifications before trusting a platform with sensitive data.

Can I send a secure fax from my email?

Yes, most secure fax services allow email-to-fax sending. Compose an email to yourfaxnumber@[provider].com, attach your document, and it transmits securely. Replies come back to your email inbox as encrypted attachments. This is the easiest method for non-technical users and requires no app or portal login.

How long do secure fax services keep my faxes?

Retention varies by plan and regulation. Typical policies: basic plans keep faxes for 30–90 days; enterprise plans retain for 1–7 years. HIPAA-required retention is typically 6 years. You can extend retention or download faxes anytime. Always verify retention policies with your provider to ensure compliance with your industry requirements.

Do I need a fax number to receive secure faxes?

Yes, you need an active fax number to receive inbound faxes. Secure fax services automatically assign a number upon signup (usually free). Incoming faxes arrive as encrypted PDFs in your email or portal. If you want to keep an existing number, most providers port it for a one-time fee ($10–$30).

What happens if my secure fax service goes down?

Reputable services maintain 99.9% uptime and redundant infrastructure. If outage occurs, queued faxes retry automatically. Most platforms offer status dashboards showing real-time health. During extended outages, customer support prioritizes recovery. To minimize risk, archive critical faxes monthly and maintain a backup provider contact for emergencies.

Can I use secure fax for international faxing?

Yes, all major secure fax platforms support international fax transmission to 190+ countries. Dropbox Fax and Comfax excel at international workflows. International rates vary ($1–$5 per page). Some countries have fax infrastructure delays; always request delivery confirmation. Check your provider's supported countries before sending to ensure the destination supports modern fax protocols.
